Experience the iconic highlights of Central and East Java before crossing the ocean into tropical Bali. This classic overland journey links the majestic 9th-century Buddhist temple of Borobudur and Royal Yogyakarta with the dramatic volcanic landscapes of Mount Bromo and the blue-fire sulfur crater of Mount Ijen. Concluding with a scenic ferry crossing to Bali, this itinerary offers an ideal combination of culture, adventure, and natural landscapes.

Day 1
Yogyakarta Airport - Prambanan Temple

Activities:

  • Hindu temple tour, and hotel check-in.

Itinerary Details:

Upon arrival at Yogyakarta Airport, meet your guide and drive to Prambanan, the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia. Built in the 9th century, its towering stone spires honor the Trimurti deities (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva).

Walk through the temple courtyard as your guide points out detailed stone carvings depicting episodes from the Ramayana epic.

Afterward, drive into central Yogyakarta for hotel check-in and an evening at leisure.

Day 2
Borobudur Temple - Mendut & Pawon Temples - Sultan Palace - Tamansari Water Castle - Kota Gede

Activities:

  • Guided walking tour inside the Sultan's Palace (Kraton) & Tamansari

Itinerary Details:

Depart early to visit Borobudur, the world’s largest Buddhist monument. Marvel at its stupas and intricate relief panels, followed by visits to nearby Mendut and Pawon temples.

Return to the city to explore the Sultan’s Palace (Kraton), Tamansari Water Castle, and artisan workshops in Kota Gede famous for silver and batik craftsmanship.

In the evening, enjoy free time strolling along Jalan Malioboro.

Optional destination in the evening: See the Ramayana Ballet performance. The Ramayana story is set in a most beautiful Hindu temple and is similar to the traditional Indian story. The performance is summarized in four scenes; the kidnapping of Shinta, Anoman's mission to Alengka, the death of Kumbakarnaor Rahwana and the meeting of Rama Shinta.

Itinerary Details:

Begin your journey toward Solo, a city known for its Javanese heritage and royal traditions. Visit Mangkunegaran Palace, a historic royal complex where visitors can see traditional Javanese architecture, cultural collections, and traces of the Mangkunegaran royal family. Take some time to explore the city’s colorful antique markets, where old objects, traditional crafts, and local goods offer a glimpse into Solo’s everyday culture and history.

From Solo, continue into the cooler highlands around Mount Lawu. Visit Sukuh Temple, a distinctive 15th-century Hindu temple located on the western slope of the mountain. Its unusual stepped, pyramid-like design and stone reliefs make it different from many other temples in Java, while the surrounding mountain landscape gives the site a quiet and atmospheric setting.

Continue to Tawangmangu, a highland area on the slopes of Mount Lawu known for its cool climate and green surroundings. Check into your hotel and enjoy a slower evening away from the city, with the fresh mountain air and peaceful atmosphere providing a comfortable end to the day.

Cemorosewu Pass - Teakwood Plantations - Majapahit Museum - Malang

Activities:

Itinerary Details:

Cross the dramatic Cemorosewu Mountain Pass, a high mountain route reaching more than 2,000 meters above sea level. The journey offers changing views of East Java’s countryside, from cool mountain landscapes to wide stretches of teakwood plantations and green paddy fields. The winding road also provides a glimpse of rural life as you travel between the highlands and lowlands.

Continue to the Majapahit Museum, located in the Trowulan area, the former center of the ancient Majapahit Kingdom. The museum houses archaeological remains and historical objects that help visitors understand the kingdom’s influence and the rich history of Java. It is a worthwhile stop for those interested in the island’s ancient heritage and culture.

In the late afternoon, continue to Malang, a city known for its cooler climate, colonial-era character, and surrounding highland landscapes. After the scenic journey from the mountains and historical sites, arrive in the city and check in at your hotel, with the evening free to rest or explore at your own pace.

Itinerary Details:

Begin the morning in Malang, a city known for its pleasant atmosphere and mix of historic and modern character. Stroll along Ijen Boulevard, where tree-lined streets are framed by well-preserved colonial-style houses, reflecting Malang’s development during the Dutch colonial period. Continue to Jodipan Village, a colorful riverside neighborhood where brightly painted homes and murals create a lively contrast to the historic streets of the city.

From Malang, travel to Singosari Temple, a historic Hindu-Buddhist temple associated with the 13th-century Singhasari Kingdom. Located in Candirenggo, the temple features detailed stone carvings and stands as one of the remaining traces of East Java’s medieval kingdoms. The visit offers a quieter glimpse into the region’s history before continuing toward the highlands.

The journey then leads east into the Tengger Highlands and the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, a volcanic landscape known for its wide Tengger caldera, Mount Bromo, and surrounding mountains. Staying near the caldera places you close to the natural landscape and prepares you for an early start the following morning, when the Bromo area is best explored around dawn.

Mount Penanjakan - Bromo Sea of Sand & Crater - Ijen Highlands

  • Hike across the Sand Sea and climb stairs to Bromo Crater

Itinerary Details:

Start the journey early at 03:30 AM by 4WD Jeep to Mount Penanjakan, one of the popular viewpoints for watching sunrise over the Bromo area. From the viewpoint, enjoy wide views of Mount Bromo, Mount Batok, and Mount Semeru, Java’s highest mountain, rising in the distance.

Continue by Jeep across the Sea of Sand, a vast volcanic plain surrounding Mount Bromo. From here, walk up 245 concrete steps to reach the rim of Bromo’s active crater, where smoke and volcanic activity can often be seen rising from within.

After returning to the hotel for breakfast, continue east toward the Ijen region. The drive passes through the changing landscapes of East Java before reaching a quieter coffee-growing area, where you will spend the night surrounded by plantations and the rural atmosphere of eastern Java.

Paltuding Post - Ijen Turquoise Crater Lake - Ketapang Harbour - Gilimanuk - Bali (Pemuteran/Lovina)

Activities:

  • Early morning hike from Paltuding to Ijen Crater
  • View turquoise acidic crater lake and traditional sulfur mining
  • Ferry crossing across Bali Strait
  • Transfer to hotel

Itinerary Details:

Depart early in the morning from Paltuding Ranger Post and begin the 3-kilometer hike toward Mount Ijen’s crater. The trail leads through the mountain forest before reaching the crater rim, where you can see Ijen Crater Lake, known for its striking turquoise color and highly acidic water. From the rim, you may also see local sulfur miners carrying loads of sulfur from the crater.

After returning to Paltuding, take a short break and enjoy breakfast before continuing the journey to Ketapang Harbour. From the harbour, board the ferry across the Bali Strait, a scenic crossing that connects East Java with the western part of Bali.

Arrive at Gilimanuk Harbour in Bali and continue by road to your resort in Pemuteran or Lovina Beach. This route offers a smooth transition from the volcanic landscapes of East Java to Bali’s quieter northwestern coast, marking the end of your Java overland journey.
