Overview

Immerse yourself deeply into the rich history and diverse landscapes of East Timor. This 4-day experience spans the coastal capital of Dili, the stunning highlands of Maubisse, and the beautiful Portuguese colonial charm of Baucau.

Day 1

Welcome to Dili! Upon arrival at Nicolau Lobato International Airport, you will be warmly greeted by our guide and transferred to a local restaurant for a delicious lunch to start your journey.

Your afternoon adventure begins with a trip along the west coast. Visit the Tibar Salt Farm to witness ancient salt-making techniques, see how seaweed is processed at Budu Tasi, and watch local villagers weave traditional palm-sheet hats and build bamboo furniture. You will also step back in time at the historic 1889 Portuguese Aipelo Prison.

Conclude your day with visits to the peaceful Tasitolu Salt Lakes, the impressive Pope John Paul II Monument overlooking the open plains, and the historic Casa Europa fortress. Before heading to your hotel, stop by the Alola Foundation to browse beautiful, authentic local handicrafts.

Day 2
Dare Memorial - Aileu Township - Maubisse - Pousada de Maubisse - Fatisi Waterfall

Start your morning early at 7:30 AM as we drive south into the cool, breathtaking mountains. Our first stop is the Dare Memorial, built to honor Australian forces, followed by a scenic drive through lush coffee plantations toward the historic town of Aileu.

Next, we arrive in Maubisse, a beautiful mountain town sitting 1,400 meters above sea level. Here, you will explore a striking Catholic church, a lively market where locals trade goods on horseback, and the iconic Uma Lulik traditional cone-shaped houses made of bamboo and mud.

Enjoy a relaxing lunch at the historic Pousada de Maubisse while soaking in the mountain views. On the drive back to Dili, we will make a stop at the refreshing Fatisi Waterfall before checking into your hotel for dinner and rest.

Day 3
Coastal Drive - Baucau City - Pousada de Baucau - Venilale Japanese Tunnels - Escola do Remo

At 7:30 AM, we set off on a 3-hour journey to Baucau, East Timor’s second-largest city. The drive itself is an incredible experience, offering spectacular views of dramatic cliffs and pristine, rugged coastlines.

Upon arrival, check into the charming, historic Pousada de Baucau where a fresh lunch awaits you. Spend your afternoon wandering around the town to admire its beautiful Portuguese colonial buildings, colorful local markets, and untouched beaches.

Later, we will drive toward Venilale to explore the historical Japanese bomb shelter tunnels built during World War II. After a quick stop to see the historic Escola do Remo building, we will drive back to Dili for your evening dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4
Cristo Rei Statue - Areia Branca Beach - Santa Cruz Cemetery - Jose Ramos-Horta House - Tais Market

Activities:

  • Sightseeing, historical tribute
  • Souvenir shopping, and airport transfer.

At 8:00 AM, we will drive around the scenic bay to visit the iconic Cristo Rei (Christ the King) statue. Climb up the 500 steps of the Fatucama peninsula to reach the base of this massive 27-meter statue and enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the ocean.

Afterward, take a quick photo break at Areia Branca, widely considered the finest beach in Dili. We then move on to the historic Santa Cruz Cemetery to pay tribute at the site of the moving 1991 independence struggle.

To wrap up your trip, we will enjoy a short drive past the residence of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Jose Ramos-Horta, followed by a final stop at the vibrant Tais Market to buy traditional woven textiles. Finally, we will transfer you to the airport for your flight home.
